Falling Whistles
I just learned about Falling Whistles which is an organization raising funds to support peace in the Congo. It’s an amazing story, a well organized charity campaign and the whistles they sell are pretty neat, too!

Basetrack
These are some amazing photos taken in Afghanistan by a U.S. Marine (1st Battalion, 8th Marines) for a project called Basetrack. They are taken primarily with an iPhone and paint a fascinating picture of life in the battlefield. Amazing stuff.

Friday Five: Podcasts
For your Friday listening, here are 5 podcasts (out of several) that I really enjoy and keep me up to speed on our current culture.
This American Life: Amazing stories that are immaculately produced. The best of the best, in my opinion.
The Moth: Stories told live on stage without notes. Hilarious and heartbreaking.
The Sound of Young America: Great interviews with really interesting people....

Awesome! Bruce Lee’s only TV interview. There’s a great point about style and expression at 7:25, but really, the whole thing is too cool!

Kansas Arts Funding
My letter to my state representatives regarding the recent proposal to eliminate the Kansas Arts Commission. You can read more about it here and send a letter here.
Update: Here’s a good article on Lawrence.com about the local impact of this.
“Governor Brownback has made public his plans to eliminate the Kansas Arts Commission. Not only does this proposal devastate the Kansas economy...

Orson Welles
A couple of interesting Orson Welles tidbits for today.
1) A great Vanity Fair article called Magnificent Obsession on the search for the lost footage from Welles’ 1942 film The Magnificent Ambersons.
2) In time for the holidays, listen to this 1939 dramatization of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol narrated by Orson Welles and starring Lionel Barrymore. Perfect for listening...

14 Actors Acting
I really love this feature from the NY Times showing 14 actors acting out classic screen stereotypes. The lighting and cinematography is beautiful, but I think I’m drawn to the scoring more than anything. The music was composed by Owen Pallett and I think it captures each scene very well. I’m sure this is a composer’s dream job which made it even more fun for me to watch!
